At this time of year I read as many gift guides as possible to help create an inspired gifting list. I love giving and enjoy finding things that make my friends and family happy. When we lived in London my kids and I used to buy all our Christmas presents from the charity shops around Marylebone Road and we still buy at least some of our gifts from charity shops. The big focus on Christmas Day is on spending time together. After a leisurely breakfast we all help out preparing lunch which is a mixture of vegan alternatives and more traditional choices for those who want them. My favourite café opens even on Christmas Day so my dog Theo and I will start the day with a coffee and a walk as usual. When we get back I will open the champagne as I always do and have a glass before everyone else gets up. This is possibly why the cooking never stresses me out….
We open our gifts after breakfast. It used to be a big deal but as my kids have become adults the focus has shifted to the food and company. But I still put a lot of effort in finding gift that will be loved. What follows is my real gifting list this festive season. I hope this sparks some ideas for you.
To a friend who has endured some hardship this year I am giving the RIISE Optimist T-shirt. Although it was created to try to imbue the climate change debate with some optimism, it can be taken more generally and I have found when I wear it that it sparks conversation and positive connections.

I use the festive season to say thank you to people who have helped during the year. Making my morning coffee is a big deal for me so I always give everyone at my favourite café a festive gift. This year I am getting a box of chocolates that they can share from Koko Black.

On the continued theme of chocolates, one of my favourite Christmas tasks is coming up with things to put in our stockings (yes I make myself one too). We look in our stockings before breakfast so the stocking was a big focus when my kids were little and still creates some excitement. For the vegans I go straight to Loco Love and for those who are not, I have recently discovered the Margaret River Chocolate Company and have placed an order with them for the non-vegans in the family.
I am getting the Bobby bag for one of my close friends. I can’t decide between the cream leather or the retro look suede in a sun suede colour. They are both beautiful so it’s a tricky choice! She is very stylish and I hope she loves it. New Zealand brand Yu Mei make such stunning bags and we are really proud to stock them on RIISE.
For my birthday this year a dear friend gave me a year supply of flowers from Bess in Paddington, my favourite florist. It was such a thoughtful gift and has made me think more about gifts that keep giving all year round. Subscriptions now range from olive oil to coffee and wine and so many other products and services.
I am getting a subscription to the Sydney Dance Company for an old friend. I also buy this gift for myself! It’s far in advance and when the performance date comes around it’s such a lovely surprise.
This time of year can be a bit hectic, so a bit of self-care is always in order after Christmas. I will give another friend a beauty package containing a Beauté Chinois Yang no.4 oil, a Lesse refining cleanser and an Aotea Harakeke Seed Oil night cream.
We recently started stocking Nagnata activewear, and I think their sets make a perfect gift. I usually go for a size bigger than what I would guess to make sure my gift always fits.
I have friends and family overseas so the winter range at RIISE comes in very handy. Unwrapping a soft cashmere jumper is bound to give a great deal of pleasure.
I usually include a tube of KawaKawa balm with any gifts sent to friends and family in colder, dryer climates. It’s a tube of miracles that is always appreciated!
This year I discovered New York based author Amor Towles and took his book of short stories, 'Table for two', on a recent holiday. I loved it and am buying it for a friend who I think will really enjoy it. Most of the stories are set in New York around the year 2000 with the final one set in Hollywood in the 1930's.
It reminds me that each relationship is unique and all our relationships require effort, understanding and compassion.
I’ve been slightly scarred by a holiday in the South of France where my daughter insisted on buying a large basket bag at a market in Arles. We then had to lug this bag around for the rest of the trip which was all by train. But a mini basket bag is too small to bring back these memories and I recently bought one for myself before having a week off.
It was the perfect size for taking a book, phone and some sunscreen to the pool. So more than one of my friends will be receiving these this Christmas.
For a family member visiting from overseas I am getting the Matin Lace Trimmed Silk Cami. It’s perfect for a warm Sydney Christmas.
As I have been writing this I have been thinking about what I would like. I always buy myself one present for my birthday but this year I have decided to buy myself a Christmas present too. I really love the shape of the Agmes Sculpted Heart Pendant and plan to get this for myself in gold.
