Crafted from hemp and organic cotton, the piece shifts from garment to canvas — absorbing colour, texture and gesture along the way. What emerges is not a singular vision, but an exploration of optimism not as perfection or certainty, but as expression, individuality and the courage to imagine differently. Photographed inside each artist’s studio, the series reveals optimism as something fluid, instinctive and deeply human — each artist approaching the piece through their own visual language.
For the final instalment of the series, we enter the studio of Dan Kyle, who is known for his expressive use of colour and materiality. Dan’s work explores the relationship between humans and the natural world — often balancing spontaneity with repetition, structure with playfulness. His practice extends beyond the studio, planting, tending to and harvesting flowers from species such as Camellia Japonica and Dahlia, which later become part of his printing process. Observing the changing characters emerging in the bush and throughout his garden, Dan’s works become quiet records of the seasons — capturing cycles of growth, transformation and renewal.
The same dialogue unfolds across Dan’s interpretation of optimism. Using flowers dipped directly into paint, Dan pressed organic forms onto the surface of the Optimist T-Shirt, creating layered floral impressions that feel instinctive, rhythmic and intentionally repeated — each mark building upon the last, reflecting optimism not as a fixed state, but as something chosen again and again through action, gesture and return.
I'd say my entire practice revolves around the idea of optimism, perhaps optimism could be framed as the subject of my work. The natural environment faces so many challenges, so many of them man made. It is so fragile but has the ability to renew time and time again and we continue to underestimate its power and resilience.
