There’s one thing on our minds right now: taking a holiday.

Some of us have been lucky enough to actually take a break, while the rest of us are sending imminent vacation plans out to the ether. Whether literally or metaphorically, that suitcase is getting packed, and here’s what the RIISE editors will be taking.

Katelin Rice, Editorial Assistant

I’m manifesting poolside cocktails and afternoon naps in the sun by purchasing this Roman pool towel by BAINA. When I go on holiday, I crave warmth and water, so naturally it feels like the perfect addition to my suitcase (which will be in use soon, I assure you). I love that the chequerboard towel is a generous size so that it’s big enough to lie on, and that it’s made from organic cotton. Plus, its calming green colour will go perfectly in my bathroom, so it can be used all year round.

I always like to free up room in my cosmetics case when I go on holiday by packing as many multipurpose products as possible. Foile’s Marula Face Oil is one of these multitaskers. Apply it ahead of boarding the plane to prevent your skin from becoming dehydrated during the flight, use it as the final step in your night-time skincare routine to lock in moisture, apply it before sunscreen during the day for a dewy look, rub it into your cuticles to keep your nails long and strong, or use a few drops on the ends of your hair to tame frizziness and flyaways in humid climates.

Courtney Kruk, Managing Editor

Not to brag but I am actually about to go on holiday to Europe, which means I’m also about to become one of those people you’re avoiding on your social media feed. I’m trying – with all my might – to pack sensibly for this trip, AKA overcome my chronic overpacking disorder (seriously, it’s a real condition that I need professional help with). Part of unlearning to pack like it’s the apocalypse every time I go on a trip is to do proper outfit planning and choose multifunctional pieces. That’s why a white, oversized shirt –namely this one from Autark– is coming on vacation with me. It works to wear open over swimwear to the beach, tucked into jeans on a night out or as an overshirt with a crop and shorts in cities. It’s basically five outfits in one, which hopefully means five completely unnecessary items of clothing that I know I won’t wear don’t make their way into my suitcase in a week’s time.

Absolutely to brag – I just got back from a trip to Spain, which kinda makes me an expert on all things travel. In between swims and generous servings of pan con tomate (bread with tomato), I learnt a thing or two about what you should and shouldn’t pack for that imminent summer vacation. Jeans and leather jackets are a hard no (not too sure what I was thinking there), though pants are not entirely out of the question. My black lightweight linen pair was on heavy rotation in the evenings. But the item I found myself reaching for most: a cute “going out” top.

My pick is this ruched number by Del Villar. It's made from breathable Tencel Lyocell with a key-hole cut out that would make Lucia from White Lotus proud. Every outing is an event when you’re on holiday and nothing says “I’m living my best life” like a sassy black boob tube. If you need me I’ll be channelling those Euro summer vibes by wearing this everywhere for the foreseeable future.

On a recent IG scroll I was struck by how many holiday-makers were giving understated glamour even while in the pool – one of the more difficult places to achieve this, if my own camera roll is anything to go by. Then it hit me: accessories. Statement earrings that work in and out of the pool. Sunglasses casually perched atop tousled wet hair. A short chain-link necklace that elevates any swimsuit. Day-to-night accessories make all the difference and are key to pulling off an effortless, no makeup, wet hair vacation vibe. Childe’s Mookhi sunglasses in red put me in summer holiday mode immediately, and I love the gold Remie Huggie Hoops by Monarc Jewellery. Their long rectangle shape is a chic update on the classic hoop, and they transition from pool to dinner perfectly.

It’s definitely on the slightly ridiculous side, but I always travel with a candle. If I can’t find a travel size I like, it’s a full-sized one packed in its own little hard case! It’s a non-negotiable that I never regret. It immediately transforms any space and makes it feel a little more like home. I have a candle burning all day while I work, something a little uplifting, then another at night. At the moment I’m burning Váhy’s Desert Nōmad. Pure luxury. I love the cedar wood notes and really subtle geranium. I also love the black glass, lack of overt branding and beautiful box. It seems to burn forever and the scent changes throughout the day. It also doesn’t smoke like some candles do. Just remember to trim the wick between uses.

Hana Okada, Head of Content

I’m counting down the days until I swap the winter for some warm holiday weather. That also means minimal makeup, so I have Axiology’s Golden Hour trio set at the top of my toiletry packing list. Apart from a tinted SPF base, the waste-free, multi-use crayons are the only makeup item I’ll need to take. I usually apply the red hues on my lips and cheeks, and the darker shade is perfect as a bronzer or eyeshadow. The compact Balmies box takes up far less space than the five individual beauty items they replace.
