Sometimes the easiest way to be an advocate or start an important conversation is to wear what you want to say, which is why we’re backing a revival of the statement tee.
If you’ve been thinking about wearing your climate concern quite literally on your sleeve, we’ve rounded up five of our favourite sustainable statement tees that not only inform on important issues but are manufactured with the environment in mind.
The Common Good Company
The Common Good Company use recycled materials and ethical practices to manufacture clothing – namely wardrobe staple t-shirts. Their current range of eponymous tees are made from recycled pre-consumer textile waste, like cotton waste found on cutting room floors, and recycled polyester, derived from single-use plastic water bottles. Each garment produced sends a simple and stylish message that clothing, when manufactured purposefully, can do more good than harm.
Founded by Australian fashion designer Kit Willow in 2014, sustainable fashion champions KITX are a familiar face in the conscious clothing space. Upping the ante on their sustainable storytelling, KITX has released an ‘Activism’ range of 100 per cent organic cotton t-shirts, perfect for outspoken environmental advocates. Standouts from the collection include the ‘Save The Bees Tee’ and ‘Earth Defenders Tee’, and $5 from every tee sold is donated to an environmental organisation.
Sustain Sportswear only produce limited quantities of their long and short sleeved slogan shirts to combat overproduction and excess manufacturing. Each shirt is made from 100 per cent organic brushed cotton, sourced from a supplier approved by Fair Wear Foundation, GOTS and PETA. Water-based, chemical-free ink is used to print the garment’s eye-catching Earth graphics and their printing partner operate entirely from solar power, so the production of their tees has a lower carbon footprint.
Stella McCartney x Greenpeace
Sustainability queen Stella McCartney recently released a limited-edition capsule collection of tees and sweatshirts to support Greenpeace’s Act for The Amazon campaign to stop deforestation in the Amazon. The collection is inspired by vintage activist designs, like the 90s style graphic featured on the Rainbow Dolphin Cotton T-Shirt, and the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation is making a donation to Greenpeace with the sale of every organic cotton piece.
London-based vegan streetwear clothing label Plant Faced Clothing are committed to manufacturing with high quality, sustainable fabrics like organic cotton as well as recycled water bottles. From their statement t-shirt range, we especially love the witty “Kale ‘Em With Kindness”, “Delete Meat” and “Dairy Is Scary” tees – excellent options for the vegan environmentalist among us. Summing up exactly why we love environmental statement tees and garments decorated with ethical declarations, Plant Faced say “fashion is one of the most powerful vessels for spreading a movement, sparking ideas and conversations”. Agreed.
